Heavy Metals Testing
The Macalat chocolate is made from 100% raw cacao paste that is certified organic, fair trade, non-GMO Project verified, gluten-free, Kosher and Halal.
Hailed as the "Food of the Gods", cacao contains the highest concentration of magnesium and antioxidants of any food on the planet. This cacao paste is made from the highly-prized Criollo beans that are grown under a canopy of shade trees in the fertile soil of Peru. In order to preserve the complex flavor profile and health benefits, the beans are carefully harvested, fermented, sun-dried, and ground into a paste. This raw cacao paste has a deep flavor and luscious texture that can be used to make a variety of rich chocolate concoctions – including Macalat.
The producer of our Macalat cacao paste is a leader in food safety, quality and transparency. They independently test every ingredient lot for a variety of contaminants. We monitor those results for the lot numbers of the ingredients, including cacao paste, that we receive. Their third-party lab tests the cacao using Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS). This method accurately tests for low levels of naturally occurring chemical elements present in cacao - this includes lead and cadmium.
Organic Certification
The Macalat superfood ingredients including cacao paste, cocoa butter, mango and Medjool dates are certified organic by CCOF. Organic certification promotes sustainable and environmentally responsible farming, biodiversity, focusing on the cycling of renewable resources, conserving soil and water and growing food without harsh pesticides and synthetic chemical fertilizers. Organic farming affects the overall environment positively and means that farmers and their families don’t have to live and work in an environment of harmful pesticides, synthetic chemicals and ecological destruction.
Ethical Sourcing
The producer of the Macalat cacao paste works with small-scale, organic, family-owned farms in Peru. The cacao, in addition to being organic certified, is also fair trade certified which benefits not only the individual farmers, but their entire community. Through sustainable agriculture and by paying fair prices to the farmers for their crops, farmers can better help protect and ensure the success of future generations.
Sustainability
The producer of our Macalat cacao paste is 100% wind and solar powered to actively reduce our carbon and nitrogen footprints. Their wholesale ingredient packaging and our retail packaging is compostable and will biodegrade in a commercial facility within 90 days.
